Introduction

The demand for clinical placements for all health professions is increasing. Placement opportunities are being increasingly sought from a diverse range of health care providers. Growth in the extent of clinical training in Australia is demonstrated in these statistics1:

    • The number of equivalent full-time students undertaking clinical placements has increased from 92,831 in 2010 to 101,709 in 2011.
    • Clinical placements have risen by more than a third in remote Australia and a quarter in very remote Australia.
    • A significant growth in clinical placements undertaken in various settings including: sub-acute (64 per cent); aged care (34 per cent); educational institutions (32 per cent); general practice (30 per cent); and primary care and community health (23 per cent).
